Happy New Year

photo from Country Living online
2009 has been a year to remember it has given us many memories; some good, others not so much, each event has been a learning curve and brought us closer together as a family. My feelings for the New Year are hopeful and for the first time in years I haven't made a list of resolutions, my only goal is to take care of myself (emotionally, physically, spiritually)!
I hope that you have a wonderful New Year's Eve and a fantastic 2010!!

Paper Crafting

Since getting my Cricut Expression a few days before Christmas I have been paper crafting like a crazy woman. Today I made the boys a few monogrammed note cards to send as thank you notes to a very nice couple that bought them unexpected gifts. I think that the cards and matching envelopes turned out well.
I will be posting a giveaway on January 1, 2010 so check back often to enter to win!!!

Have a great day!!

New Traditions

This Christmas was a little different for Tom & me as far as gift exchanging goes, we decided to buy what we wanted instead of surprising each other with handpicked gifts. He wanted a 1972 Ford F-250 truck to add to his collection, I wanted a new purse and Cricut Expression scrapbooking machine, I think I like exchanging gifts this way because we each were thrilled with our purchases. He bought his truck from a man in Minnesota(ebay), I called Neimans and visited my favorite scrapbooking store, it was that simple and it was great!

The longer we are married the more I realize that romance isn't always like its written in novels, it's the little things like laughing over how well he did picking out my presents and how I knew exactly which truck to buy that make two people stay so deeply in love with each other after being married thirteen years. I look forward to many more new Christmas traditions with the man that I love so very much.

Cousins

Do remember what it was like as a child going to your grandparent's house for a family get together and playing with your cousins for hours, laughing, arguing and planning overnight stays? My children had the opportunity to be with all their cousins at grandma's house the Saturday before Christmas, my Mom was thrilled to have all her children and grandchildren together. I hope that my children remember days like that forever!

Holiday Happenings 2009

Our Holiday week started out with a bang and has ended with a boom! Late last Friday night we had a huge snow storm hit Kentucky which proceeded to knock down trees and power lines all over Eastern Kentucky, Tom had to go to work in the middle of the night because the mines lost all power and the generators wouldn't work. Saturday morning I had to call the fire department to come cut trees out of our road so I could get to Ashland to see my baby brother before he leaves for Iraq.

Monday Tom & I hired a sitter and finished up last minute shopping for the boys which would've been nice had he not had to be on the phone with work the whole time we where out, but we got to be together alone for a few hours.

Tuesday Tom called to tell me to meet him at the hospital because they were admitting his Grandfather and he wanted to see the boys in case he didn't make it home in time for Christmas.

Wednesday morning Jonah woke up with a fever, off to the pediatrician we went; his asthma has gotten worse and he now needs two different inhalers each day and he had what she said was a cold, well that cold turned into two days of fevers that reached 104 more than once, thankfully he is feeling better now.

This brings us to Christmas Eve, my in-laws finally make to our house, after we opened gifts my mother-in-law got a horrible stomach virus and spent the next 27 hours in bed.

On Christmas day I was worn out, I had to cook dinner, go see Tom's grandparents (his grandfather was released from the hospital on Wednesday), take care of a sick MIL who couldn't even get up to get herself a drink of water and deal with the mess of Christmas wrapping paper and boxes everywhere!

Now it's Saturday, the in-laws are still here, I've cleaned the nasty bathroom that the sick MIL used (GROSS!!!) and I have decided to leave the state for Christmas next year!!!

Even though this seems like a horrible week, which it has been, my boys loved everything that they received for Christmas and have been getting along so well that it's scary, I think they know that Mommy has reached her breaking point! To see those two smiling faces is worth all the trouble that this week has held!

I hope that your Christmas was merry and bright and that the New Year brings you peace and joy!!!

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

This is what we woke up to this morning, about 7 inches of heavy, wet snow!! It's so bad that we haven't had power since last night and I had to call the fire department to cut trees out of the road so I could get to my Mom's house for Christmas with my family. My poor husband got called out to work last night around midnight and didn't get home until 5:00 this evening, so he missed Christmas with my family (I almost believe he was sad, LOL) but when I got home tonight he had the generator running and the fireplace going, he's awesome!!!
Thank you for the kind words on my previous post they meant so much to me!
Have a good weekend!!

Beachy Burlap Christmas Home Tour

Merry Christmas and welcome to our home! The Nester is hosting a Christmas Tour of Homes, I thought I would show you what I've done for our Christmas decorations this year. I decided to go with a beach theme because of our love of the water and all things summer, I think I went a little crazy with the burlap and seashells, but I love it! The front door, foyer, stairway, mantle and family tree all have seashells, starfish and burlap. The dining room is decorated with a sugared fruit theme. The boy's rooms are more festive with one being done in red & white candy canes and the other with blue & silver. You can click on the photo to enlarge it if you want a closer look.
Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful holiday season!

Computer "Room" Makeover

before
after

Our computer "room" is actually the closet underneath our stairway, this really works out well because the "room" is in the great room and we can keep a close eye on the children when they are online. However, being the pack rat that I am it tends to get a little messy (thank goodness for the door)! This was by far the hardest space that I painted during my makeover, I ripped out the nasty, stained carpet added the peel and stick parquet tiles, new trim and a new chair to give this little space a fresh new look. I really like how it turned out, now if I can only keep it tidy, wish me luck on that one, LOL!!
I have been a scrapbooking fool lately, I'm trying to complete three albums for my brothers by Sunday! Yes, I'm crazy but they are looking so good and it really isn't that hard to do three of everything when you are doing exactly the same design. I'll post pictures when I've finished.
We are celebrating Christmas with my family this weekend because my youngest brother leaves for Iraq in three weeks, please keep him & his family in your prayers. The last tour that he served he wasn't married and didn't have any children, this time he is leaving a wife, 5 year old son, two year old daughter and 4 month old daughter behind. It's going to be really hard on my SIL she is going to stay in Kansas with the children instead of coming home, so please say an extra prayer for her.
Take care and have a great day!!

Use What You Have

I'm trying to "shop" my house for things that I don't use to make a few inexpensive Christmas decorations.

I desperately needed something new for my front door, I was so tried of the cheap WalMart prelit wreath from years ago so I took a little walk up my charming country road with my handy dandy Pampered Chef kitchen scissors (we jokingly call them "the bone cutters" because they will cut through anything) to cut some fresh pine and to look for a few pine cones. Then I rummaged through the box of Christmas decorations that are missing a piece or broken but you can't stand the thoughts of throwing them away and found several things that I could use for my front door project. The next step was to get out the hot glue gun and go to work!
This is what I came up with, I really think it looks nice against the black door, one of my neighbors stopped be yesterday and wanted to know where I had gotten, that makes me want to make more things.

What are you making for your home this Christmas season?

A Sea of Blue

The last few days all I have been seeing are shades of blue! I have been painting my kitchen, foyer & dining room, the kitchen is finished, the foyer just needs a second coat, the dining room is primed it needs to be taped off then I can start adding color. Since my computer crashed I have lost some of my older photos but I will try to show you the before and after photos when I've finished. I didn't realize how dark and dingy my walls looked with the deep red and olive green, even the boys have noticed how much larger the rooms seem with a few coats paint. I will give you a little hint, the new shade of paint is called Mercer Blue.
Have a great day!!

October 25, 1998

October 25, 1998 was a day that changed my life forever! After spending the evening with my parents the night before, the long drive home and being five months pregnant at the time with our first child I was easily exhausted, so Tom & I were sleeping in on that crisp autumn morning eleven years ago when the phone rang, it was my youngest brother Kevin saying that our Dad's heart had stopped and to get to Ashland as fast as we could. When we arrived at the hospital my middle brother Wayne came to me crying, he gave me hug and told me that Daddy was gone, I looked around and saw my oldest brother Steve comforting his eight year old daughter, I felt like I would fall to the ground then I saw my Mom and I lost it. You see my Mom & Dad had a marriage that was truly made in heaven, the love that they shared for each other was like no other, they were in the prime of their lives, they both were 55, Daddy had semi-retired, they were traveling all over the world on fabulous vacations and were building their dream home on the coast of Florida when this horrible tragedy struck. He was a kind, thoughtful, intelligent and wonderful man who helped so many people in his short time on this earth, he was always the first to lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need, to churches or to help missionaries around the globe who needed vehicles or Bibles for their congregation. As a true testament to his character he did these things and much more anonymously, he never wanted recognition for his generosity which only assures me of what I all ready knew about him, that he was indeed a man of God. He was a powerful presence in our family and is missed everyday in so many ways by all of us. I look at my children and wish that he could see them and that they would've known their grandfather.

It's amazing to me how time goes on even when you think that it couldn't possibly without the people that you love the most. During the past eleven years our family has welcomed five new grandchildren, his youngest son has served in Iraq for a year and is leaving in a few weeks to serve another tour, the older grandchildren he knew are graduating from high school and starting their lives at college, Mom still mourns him everyday but has learned to smile and enjoy life again. I'm thankful that we are able to heal and move on but in everything that we do he's always in our hearts and on our minds.

Chit Chat

My computer is up and running, the Dell support team was able to save my pictures and reload everything via the Internet and phone, this just blows my mind, that someone in India can log-on to my computer in Kentucky and fix my problems, go figure! But, I'm thankful to back on my own computer and not on one of the sticky things that my sons call their laptops, LOL!

We had a great time with our friends at the lake this weekend, the dinner party was fun and the food was delicious. Unfortunately, we had to miss the potluck on Saturday night because the boys both starting running fevers.

I took them to the nurse practitioner at Tom's work yesterday both have Strep throat, thankfully they tested negative for Influenza A & B. Back in the Spring our pediatrician seemed to think that Jonah may have asthma, yesterday he was wheezing so badly that we left the Health Clinic with steroids and an inhaler. This is a new world for us she told me to be very careful with him and to never leave home without an inhaler. Do you have children with asthma and how has it changed their lives? We are so thankful for Tom's company they have set up Health Clinics at each of the mines for their employees & their families, what a blessing, no more waiting rooms full of sick people when your children's immune systems are down.

There is a little fabric shop in Somerset that I have been trying to get to for months and I finally stopped in on Saturday, let me just tell that it is a thrifty girl's dream! You'll have to excuse the poor photography, I was shaking from excitement because one of the employees had just told me that everything on hangers was only $3.00 per yard!!! When I got to the register to checkout, with my arm load of hangers, the young boy didn't even measure the fabric he just held it out and said, "I think that looks like about two yards, you okay with that? Ah, I think I'll just let you have it for $3.00 and how about $6.00 for the other piece? We just want this stuff, GONE!!" I thought I would pee my pants from excitement, LOL!! That young man has made a friend for life and the little fabric store will probably get sick of seeing me. This place was a mess, for me that's the charm of stores like that, you leave with something beautiful.

I will have my TWOC week three craft post up by Friday, be sure to stop by Red Writing and see what neat things these talented woman are doing for Christmas.

Have a great day!!!

The Big Crash of 09

Well it finally happened, my computer crashed on Wednesday night! The funny thing is I have to ask my sons if I can borrow one of their laptops, then of course that leads to a big fight between the two of them because they argue over whose turn it is to let me use their computer, so I need to buy a replacement ASAP! I think I may buy a laptop instead of a new desktop, what kind of computer do you use? I would love a MAC but they are way out of my budget!

We are going to a dinner party tonight and a potluck dinner Saturday night, so I need to raid my closet for something warm to wear. I hope that everyone has a good weekend!

I Won, I Won, I Really Won!!!

A few days ago Jen from Tater Tots & Jello hosted a giveaway and I was the winner, yeah me!! When I got home from grocery shopping today there was surprise waiting on my front porch, a wonderful package from Sprinkles Cupcakes in California. I have never tried their cupcake mixes, Jen graciously gave me my choice of flavors and being the banana freak that I am I chose banana, I mean how can you go wrong with banana anything? The beautiful packaging even gives you the recipe for the frosting, yummy! I think I better save all my weekly Weight Watchers points for the day I bake these.
Jen, thank you so much for the lovely present, your blog gives me lots of inspiration & ideas and I always get excited when I see that you've added a new post. I hope that you have a great day, because of you I've had a wonderful day!

Twelve Weeks of Christmas ~ Part Two

Red Writing is hosting Twelve Weeks of Christmas, this is the second in the series, this week is all about family traditions. We have several Christmas traditions that we all look forward to each year but I would have to say that our favorite one started 13 years ago when Tom bought me an ornament for our first Christmas. Each year he gives Johnson, Jonah and me a new ornament that pertains to something that happened that year or a character that one of the boys are into, we also give him an ornament about something he has done for the year. Our tree now tells a story of our life together. I always put the tree up the day after Thanksgiving and I cry my eyes out as I hang each ornament, the memories they bring back are priceless.

Another thing that we do is Santa Sack, my mom made each of the boys a sack to hang on their beds starting December 1st and they get a little treat each night through December 23rd. This was a great idea when they were little and were satisfied with Dollar Tree stuff, now that they are older and know that there isn't a Santa they are requesting CDs, money, ipod gift cards and the list goes on!

What are some of your traditions? When do put your tree up? Do you hit the Black Friday sales?

Happy Anniversary

Our love story began thirteen years ago today, I married my best friend, I know people say that all the time, but Tom and I truly are best friends and soul mates, we appreciate each other and every day that we have together. We've been through a lot in our years together but we've weathered every storm together drawing strength and support from each other. We are blessed to have a great marriage and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to his wife.

Front Door Makeover

My paint job is far from perfect but in the words of the Nester, "it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful". I'm loving my front door makeover, I still need to touch-up a few places, paint the swing and paint the trim but I think it looks so much better(you can see the before here). The previous owners had tried to varnish a fiberglass door, needless to say I had a mess on my hands and a much bigger job than I anticipated, isn't that how it always goes. But in the end I learned how to paint a door and gained a little confidence with a paint brush.

On a happy note, I saw my surgeon today for my 6 week check-up, he said that my scar looked great and would get smaller within the next 6 months and that I could do anything that I wanted with no restrictions! I think I'll paint my dining room and kitchen next week, anyone want to drive to Kentucky to help me? LOL!!!

Have a great weekend!!!!

New Hair Style & Color

I recently had my cut short and I love it!! But, the gray was taking over, I tried to color it myself and got one side a different shade than the other, don't ask because I don't know how I did it, LOL! Then I had my surgery and couldn't lean over the tub to add more color, so today I had my hair professionally colored and highlighted!! I'm amazed that I agreed to let my hairdresser do the highlights because I've always been afraid of them with my dark brown hair, I really like what she did and so does my hubby. Do you have your hair colored at a salon or do you color it yourself?

38 Years Young?

Yesterday was my 38th birthday, I can't believe that I'm that old! My birthday weekend, as Tom called it, started on Friday when he bought me a Blackberry Curve, which I have become addicted to in 5 short days, followed by a weekend at the lake eating out at all my favorite restaurants and a trip to the pumpkin patch. My mom came to visit yesterday, she brought me several lovely presents but the best present she gave me was spending the day with me teaching me how to hem pants. My Aunt Kathy and godson Jonathan sent me a hilarious birthday card and beautiful Autumn candle set that I can't wait to use!

The best present of all is my good health, since my thyroidectomy 6 weeks ago I feel better than I have in years! I finally have energy to do all the things that I've put off for the last year and I'm so thankful that God chose to heal my body!

I hope that you all have a great week!!

Twelve Weeks of Christmas--Lists

Red Writing is hosting a twelve weeks of Christmas link up, you should check it out and join in, I think it's going to be a lot of fun. This week is all about lists, your list can be about whatever you want it to be.

Around the first of October I always start making a list of what to get everyone. I usually start by checking out my gift shelf to see what I can find on it, then I make a list of everyone I need to buy for (which is around thirty people) and start searching for the perfect gift. This year will be a little easier because I have decided to give all my teenage nieces & nephew money or a gift card. I keep a copy of my list in my purse & in a folder, as I find a gift I write down the price, who it's for and put the receipt in the folder, this helps to track my spending and to keep my budget intact.

I can't wait to read every one's ideas and lists.

Have a good evening!

Calling All Painters!!

I need help!
My front door looks awful!

Before I can hang this beauty, the door needs a face lift.

My problem is I don't know where to start, the door is made of metal with a faux wood finish. I want to paint to paint it black, what type of paint should I use, do I need to sand it, do I paint the white trim first or the door first?

Any suggestions?

Tickets Please!

I love the movies! I like to go the theatre, drive-in, or renting movies either one is fine with me, just as long as it involves lots of popcorn and candy!

The fall and winter months are hard on our family because all spring and summer we are at the lake every weekend boating, riding our mule, building fires and roasting marshmallows. When cooler weather starts we close up the camper and winterize the boat so everyone is a little bored on the weekends. To keep the children happy we will have party foods for dinner, rent a movie, play games, eat lots of candy & popcorn just about every Saturday night, this has become a family tradition one that I hope my children will pass on to my grandchildren(20 years from now). What does your family do on cool fall Saturday nights?

The items for the gift basket today are: a family friendly DVD, a bucket of movie theatre popcorn and four boxes of movie candy. Thanks again for all the comments!! Have a great day!

Paper Crafting

Paper Crafting has been a hobby of mine since my oldest son was born in 1999, my how things have changed in the scrapbooking world in ten short years. I also love to make cards, they are so quick & easy and on days when I'm feeling "crafty" but don't have a lot of time I can make a card or two in about 30 minutes. Lately, I've started stamping, this is becoming addictive, thanks to Hobby Lobby I can always get stamps 50% off! Today's giveaway item is a die-cut mini scrapbook kit with a Christmas theme.

Getting Lost In A Good Book

Another one of my favorite things to do is to read, I have always loved to read, especially a good romance novel and biographies. Lately, I have been sipping a nice hot cup of cappuccino while reading. Today's items in the giveaway basket are the last romance novel I read, A Summer Affair by Elin Hilderbrand and a canister of my favorite cappuccino drink mix, Hills Bros sugar free, french vanilla. I'm enjoying reading your comments and can't wait to see who wins!

My Hobbies Post #96

One of my favorite hobbies is shopping, not just any shopping but bargain shopping. I love to prowl through the sale racks of TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Macy's, Dillards, Goodwill and Hobby Lobby looking for the next great deal. Unfortunately for me and fortunately for Tom we only have a Goodwill in our little town, I have to drive 1 & 1/2 hours to the nearest store of choice. This morning I dropped the boys off at school (just a little early, shh, don't tell anyone) and headed to Ashland for a little shopping with my Mom, we always have a good time together! We stopped by Hobby Lobby to look at their fall things, they are really pretty this year and the Christmas ornaments are already 40% off this week, now that's a bargain. So it only stands to reason that the first item in my giveaway basket is a $10.00 Hobby Lobby gift card!
Have a great day and remember to check in each day to see what the next item in the gift basket will be and to leave a comment for your chance to win!

#95

This is my 95th post in a little over a year, I guess I must be a slow blogger, LOL!

Over the past year I've tried to decide which direction that I wanted my blog to go, I read several blogs daily and love how these talented ladies find so many interesting things to share with their readers, I often struggle with each post that I write but enjoy the process. What type of blogs keep you coming back day after day to peak into their worlds? I tend to read blogs that are about life, plain & simple, they share the struggles of motherhood, cooking and homemaking. I also love blogs about decorating, I'm challenged in this area and have learned so much over the past year about placement of furniture & accessories and paint colors. I often feel inadequate when reading blogs, they seem to have perfect lives, homes, husbands, children, finances and the list goes on, the reality of it is that they are sharing what makes them happy. So my dear readers I have decided to just do that, share what makes me happy! My life may not be perfect (whose is?) but it's my life and I love it!

This week I hope to blog my 100th post! In honor of this occasion I will be having a give away for anyone who leaves a comment on this post through the 100th post, you will be entered for each comment that you leave and the winner will be announced on the 101th post. Each day I will share a hobby that I enjoy, the gift basket will contain an item regarding each day's post! Be sure to tell a friend to enter, it's going to be a great giveaway!

Have a great week!!!

Labor Day 2009

Tom's family came to visit this weekend, at first I was upset because I didn't feel up to having company but it turned out for the best, my mother-in-law cleaned and did laundry all day yesterday. I took a few photos of the kids together for my photography class, I'm really enjoying the class and can't wait to learn more. I hope that each of you had a great weekend.

Great Doctor's Report!!!!

I saw my endocrinologist today she said that everything looked good and that I was healing well. I'm so thankful for an excellent pathology report from my thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, and lymph nodes, everything came back clear, YEAH!!! That means no cancer anywhere in sight and no radioactive iodine treatments. My blood work is a little off, my calcium, potassium & sodium are too low and my phosphorus is too high, we are working on adjusting this things and I should feel better than ever in about a month, YEAH!!! I can't wait to feel like doing things around the house and just in time for the holidays. Lookout world I will be a crafting fool in a few weeks!

Cola Chicken

Photo courtesy of Taste of Home Magazine Online

I made this fabulous chicken recipe last night for dinner, it was so quick and easy to make, Tom loved it, he said that the sauce would be good with tortilla chips, then he proceeded to eat several chips dipped in the leftover sauce, that's a hungry man for you, LOL. Here is the recipe, I hope that you all enjoy it as much as we did.

Cola Chicken

1/2 cup chopped onion

2 T. oil

4 boneless, skinless chicken breast

1 (12 ounces) cola -- I used a regular coke

1 cup ketchup

1/8 t. garlic powder

1/8 t. salt

1/8 t. pepper

4-1/2 t. cornstarch

3 T. cold water

In a skillet, saute onion in oil until tender. Add chicken; brown on all sides. Carefully add cola, ketchup, garlic powder, salt & pepper. Cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes or until chicken juices run clear. Remove the chicken and keep warm.

Combine the cornstarch and cold water until smooth; add to skillet. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Return chicken to pan; heat through.

Family Dinners

My lovely mother gave a year's worth of Taste of Home Magazines to read while I am recuperating from my surgery, needless to say, all it has done is make me hungry! There is something about this time of year that makes me want to cook, I guess its the cool crisp morning air or the fact the children are back in school and I feel as if they need a hot meal at the end of their day. Last night I made a chicken, broccoli & rice dish that was really good, I think that I would make it again. Tonight I'm making Cola-Chicken, it really has a can of Coke in it, will see what it tastes like and if its good I'll post the recipe, I'm fixing rolls, roasted new potatoes, slaw and sweet corn to go with it, I can't wait til dinnertime!

~~Favorite Things~~

Girly Stuff is hosting a Favorite Things link party today so I thought that I would share a few of my favorite things with you.

My favorite flowers in the whole world are hydrangeas, they make think of my Grandmother Bethel, she was a lovely lady.

My favorite thing to drink that I can't go a day without is Diet Pepsi, YUM-O!

My favorite romance author is Danielle Steel, I love to read her books, I always feel swept away by her characters.
